I use a product called "Maniseal" on exhaust manifold to head and manifold to downpie on my D1 300tdi , it is a ceramic putty type stuff that does not shrink when the metal cools. Don't know if it's available over your way but I think Holts make a similar product.

I use the sealant because, mainly I'm too tight to pay for new gaskets and sick of leaks when I know it can be done better, when doing top end only ever use new Head Gasket, every other gasket gets replaced with silicone or used gaskets with maniseal/silicone, no oil leaks, no gas leaks and cheaper.
I own Jap cars that use pretty exclusively silicone sealants other than critical joints and they never leak even after hundreds of thousand kilometres.
Only parts of our Disco that leak are those fitted with orig gaskets.
