I have a 91 Defender 110 2.5 TDI and i am not sure what gearbox it has, i have read if the 5th gear is to the lefty and up its a LT77 but i also looked a new gearbox Lt77 on ebay and it said would not fit my car???
I think its a LT77, anyway looking for a replacement cause mine is playing up and think i would prefer a re con rather than mess around for a couple of weeks trying to get this one sorted.
The question is a see a lot of R380's out there and wondered if they would be a direct replace? they seem to come minus bell housing and transfer box, and what would you do? which is the best box??

Thanks
David

lt77 reverse is up and to the left r380 down and to the right,lt77 for a defender is different than one for a disco etc as defender will have short bell housing ,r380s have the longer bell housing as well as disco so wont fit yours ,lr did and ashcrofts still do the short bell housing r380 to replace the lt77 when r380 first came out ,but are very rare out there in the market , a good g suffix lt77 is as good as an r380 when r380 and 300 tdi were introduced engine was moved forward upto the rad enabling the fitment of longer bell housing as disco, rrc and v8 defenders ,unlike 200 tdi and previous diesel in def were engine sits against bulkhead
