I'm no expert on the L322 but this sounds very much like a key sync issue to me.
The fact that key 1 worked then didn't, key 2 fixed the problem for a short while until the codes rolled out of sync.
@Saint.V8 might know the sync routine on these or possibly @Rick-the-Pick
Could be the passive immobilisation coil at the ignition barrel?

I know Ant has done the key synch instructions before, and not sure who it was, but they were put up again fairly recently by someone. It might even be in the technical archive.
Whoever it was, @Ticky , a quick search will most likely find it.

From what has been written and from what wazzajnr has wrote my first port of call would be to make sure that both key batteries are fully charged before proceeding with changing any bits

A note on fitting new battery's in the fobs DO NOT loose the tiny little bit that looks like a bit of plastic out of the case it is the transponder thet the lock senses as you put the key in the ignition, ask Saintv8 how he knows this

The ignition switch can be tested by checking the relevant fuses have the same voltage as the battery. The ignition switch supplies various systems simultaneously but on separate feeds which we found recently on a L322 with non starting issues. Some of the fuses had 12.5 volts and some had as low as 2 Volts.
