Seem to remember a problem with the rear diff, some were recalled, others not. Listen for a rumble from the rear.

Rear diff bearing failure is pretty common. The Haldex unit can fail and is very costly to replace. Wheel bearings are another week point. It's becoming more common for engine failure as they get more miles on them. I've heard of gearbox issues on both manual and automatics.
Sounds gloomy but there are loads around so hopefully you'll get one that is issue free.

I think the problem with the rear diffs were that they were not recalled! I think it was cars up to 2010 that had problems with the diff. Most will probably have had the changes done or the unit swapped - but there was a thread on here only the other day of someone else who had been in argument with JLR and they agreed to cover 1/2 the bill. So if its before 2011 - check to see if the diff has been replaced.
I just checked on ebay and there appears to be only 1 ad for (new) replacement Haldex units - with a price of £3K. I though though a while back someone was selling them for about £250? Maybe that was a scam!

The Haldex failure could be attributed to lack of fluid and filter changes. When the original Haldex was fitted into the Audi quattro, the fluid and filter changes were at 12K miles. This added at least £100 to the annual service price. For this reason, I believe that once a Haldex quipped vehicle reaches an age where the owner considers dealer servicing is no longer cost effective, the important fluid/ filter changes are missed. This would cause failure of the pump and hence the unit itself.
The diff failure is attributed to the bearings being to small for the job in hand, giving a life of 50K miles or so.

Surely for a luxury vehicle and still expensive model you would accept regular service in these areas of potential correctable problems. I accept most Freelander 1 are now old or a few running 2wd but even I factor service and repairs to keep this beast of burden going.
