Hi all,

I'm about to replace the door lock actuator/motor thingy on my P38 passenger door. I've done a recce and it looks like a bit of a test of patience,; has anybody been there and done that who might like to give me any helpful tips..?

I'm proceeding without a Haynes manual as I still can't find a copy of the bugger anywhere.

Ta in advance,

G

yea its easy, unscrew the old one, wiggle it out and the fitting off, replace!! it is fiddly but its not rocket science.

strip the old one and give everything a wiggle and re grease, you will prolly find its in perfect working order just a bit old n grubby!! you could try reviving the old one firt and get a refund on the new one!! its a common issue and doesnt take much to sort. also make sure you clean the connection up!!

Thanks guys, I've heard that this is a common issue and that a good clean and a scrub usually pays off. I figure that if it's a git to get at then might as well stick a new one in and be done with it but Gav, you're saying it's really worth a clean up first?

That'll be Saturday morning sorted then!

Cheers,
G

No Haynes for the P38 eh? I'm rather proud of that... After all, they've done one for sex and Concorde; P38 too much of a challenge I suppose!

It will help to remove the operating rod from the outer door handle first. There is one screw in the edge of the door which looks identical to the four holding the latch to the door. Be careful not to pull the screw right out as there is a spacer between the door and the handle or the spacer will drop down into the door cavity. When the screw is undone, slide the handle rearwards and it will come away from the door enough to release the spring clip which retains the latch operating rod.If you loosen the four latch screws and remove two, after the rod has been disconnected at the handle and the cable from the interior lever is also disconnected, the remaining two screws holding the latch can be removed, the latch moved upwards to enable the sill locking pushbutton to be unscrewed...the latch complete with rods can then be jiggled out.
As Gav says, also remember to disconnect the plug to the latch motor cable

Just like Irish said.
I did mine not long ago for the first time.
Once the door card was off, i got my mobile phone inside and took plenty of pics before undoing anything. Just to be safe !
I took my c/locking casing apart, and found it had a burnt out motor.Well goosed!
Fiddly job, if you have big hands like me.Doh..

Thanks for that Irish and Andy, I've decided to take a girlie approach to this and get a new motor before I get in there and find it's buggered and have to start again. Still, if it isn't buggered, it can act as a spare for the next one that goes!
