Hi,

min no what is likely the latest in a series of daft questions, could anyone explain where I might expect to find the Glovebox strut ?

If there is one in our P38, then it certainly doesn’t work, the box flops open unceremoniously.

I thought I’d have a poke around to check the state of the strut and I can’t even find the blinking thing.

From what I’ve read it sounds like the retaining bracket is a common failure so I wonder if it’s just been completely removed.

Would be very grateful for any enlightenment !

Thanks

Bob

There is a strut in behind pics below

The glovebox shouldn't just fly open it should gradually drop, mine used to drop and hit te floor, due to the brass inserts breaking free from the glove box

You can just about see it in these pics..

It is secured to the back of the glove box with 2 screws, 2 brass inserts sit in the plastic below

I drilled straight through the box and used a torx bolt to hold it, I had to tap it too!

The centre console lit should also spring up when you press the button ;)

Thank you so much, that’s really helpful.

I’ll have a look tomorrow, mine lacks any grace. Oh and the centre console is floppy too so that’s on the list as well !

Island 4x4 sells them ...£22.50 +vat ....But caravan door struts are near the same size for £12.00 quid or so ,,,,,,Just saying:rolleyes:

Oh, one thing, how did you get the box so far open in the second pic ?

mine doesn’t open that far... I have had deeper access but only by removing the three screws above

It was broken thats why it opened so far ;)

You have to take the plastic support structure off to remove the strut off the box, if yours isn't broken like mine ;)

A few screws

Didn't I read somewhere always check opener button works before screwing back in place or there could be problems.

Thats a job to add to the list thanks Henry:)
It is amazing having a working strut in there, it stops it smaking your passengers on the knee when its opened ;)

Having one on the centre console cubby is nice too, it just springs up ;)

Just been out and checked for the strut yes its there, no it dont work any more, no strut on the early models cubby box unless its fitted to the flip over drinks ones.

That rings a bell. I seem to recall an issue when @MrGorsky was fiddling with his. Cannot remember how we got around it after it happened either!

Trust you!

Enery is right. The brass inserts you need to concern yourself with they are a PITA. Other thing to watch is what I did. Forgot to preload the open-button mechanism before putting it together so effectively superlocked myself out of the glove box. Only option was to break in which causes slight damage however careful you are.
