Xenon (HID presumably) in standard headlights are both useless at providing a good beam pattern, and dangerous to anyone coming the other way.
Xenon headlamps units are good and safe, providing they've been fitted correctly.

From what I have read the later D4 xenons are meant to be rubbish, remember one guy saying not fit for purpose!

Were they Xenon lights, or those H9 halogen bulbs, with lenses, which in my experience, aren't fit for purpose.
Think its a real mix and match on the later cars, but think the ones they reckon are proper xenons are rubbish, and not a patch on the D3 xenons.
Early hi spec D3 had bi-xenons dip and high, plus h7 on high as well (so total of 4 lights) the lights can be adaptive ie they turn whoop whoop, also have extra turn bulbs, all in all quite decent.
Wife had two audis with xenons cant say I was impressed with them at all, her latest one has h7s and not a bad light output, she moaned about the other two, not a peep about this one so they must be okay!

My D3 had Bi-Xenon lights, which were really very good. I put Osram Night Breakers in the H7 mains too, just to give them a bit extra!
Our family Mazda CX5 has steering LED lights, which are even better than the D3 Xenon on dip, but not quite so good on main beam, as there's no auxiliary H7 bulbs to help out.
All these are much better than my H7 bulb Freelander 2 SE headlamps, which I plan on changing to Xenon, when funds allow.
