I've just changed the axle and transfer box oils... (Gearbox oil is next week) the axle's had no signs of any leaks, and aren't leaking after the change , the transfer box, and the chassis support bar under it had a quantity of oil on it from an existing leak... I changed the oil and cleaned everything up as much as I could.. its still leaking... the leak is not from either the drain or refill plugs, but the new oil is slowly dripping off one of the screws from the bottom cover, I've tried to find the source of the leak, but I can't be sure... should I just replace the bottom cover gasket / sealant and hope for the best, or is it likely that the leak is from somewhere else ? it's done (120k miles)

2 x screw on t/box sump are drilled rigth through so a bit of sealant on threads helps when oil drained next time the others dont go through so wont leak ,intermediate shaft with big nut on rear face often leaks were it is situated in front face ,case wears and new oring and silicone sealant can help it most times output seals often need new flange as well at front rear is usually better

Thanks for that... I'm not going to replaces the seals myself... I'll keep an eye on the oil level... if it gets bad I'll book it in somewhere.

Jamesmartin...

I have a similar issue which I was going to tackle next.. Are the seals on the box relatively straight forward of do I need to remove the autobox to get to the transfer box??

out put seals are fairly easy ,3/4 socket set helps to tap seals home ,fill rear of seal with vaseline etc to hold garter spring on when fitting they come off easy,dont need to touch auto unless input seal leaking but this aint that common,favourite is lntermediate shaft and seals

Its easier to spot a leaking intermediate seal ate the rear, ( round the nut ).

If you can get your head " up " enough underneath, you may be able to see if the front one is leaking.

cool. thanks. I think mine is leaking from the input seal. oh dear..
