Hi,

I've found small amounts of oil on the rear wheel when stationary and its slightly dirtier, though difficult to tell when its all covered in mud! I wiped it clean and soon found it covered in oil again.
Has the end seal gone on the axle or something more terrible and what do I need to do to check it out please.

Unless it's brake fluid, then it's likely to be yer diff oil which means the axle oil seal has gone an it's draining out through the wheel bearings. It int a disaster, one of those jobs to do when you feel like it. If it is yer brake fluid, then it is a disaster an needs sorting yesterday.

A temporary fix, which if it is the axle oil is fine, is to put a jubilee clib around the rubber hub cap.

Check the axle breathers, when you change the oil seal.

Mine was blocked causing the seal to blow in the first place, if the breather's not cleared the seal will only go again when the axle oil heats up. Blow compressed air through it.

Just registered with this great list today.
I'm currently on a different continent than my Landys (so can't run out and re-familiarize myself with it), but am wondering why nobody has mentioned the paper gasket between the axle flange and hub or, more commonly, one or more of the 6? flange bolts loosening enough to let oil seep through. But the first question to ask is where, more precisely. Inside the rim think brake fluid, outside the rim think gear oil and the above-mentioned possibilities at the flange. BTW, new flanges are cheap and do wear, so consider replacing them if you're pulling that stuff apart anyway.
Another point: does the seepage change depending on whether that side of the vehicle is high or low? That would be gear oil as brake fluid leaks from high pressure, not gravity.
And, speaking of pressure, ditto what was said about axle breathers - they do clog and are rarely cleaned out like they need to be or the oil will become pressurized on the highway.
