hi people, been gone a while now since selling my much loved and hated p38 and nearly ready to buy an L322 and was wondering the average life of the diesel and petrol engine, now I strip rebuild engines and have done many of both engines but by the time they come in for work there allready neglected and flogged to death so it's hard to say how long to expect from a decent half right (semi service history) motor,
Any ideas chaps and ladies? Is there a general rough mileage for a petrol and a diesel ? Many thanks

There was a post like this a few days ago regarding engine life's

Either way I'd always go for a diesel

If you need more poke then the v8 petrol will do the job, just quite juicy to run

Diesel should be good for 250/300K miles if well maintained. Me no likey petrol.

If you build engines for a living, you should be well aware that a diesel engine, if properly maintained, will far outlast a petrol engine.

Hi people thanks for reply, yeh I do no that diesels are far better for higher mileage and I do prefer diesel, but I was wondering if there was a "saying" or a general rule with the two engines, for example the nissan navara (spit spit) D22 Diesel engine is only good for around 70,000mile due to crank issues etc... But don't re-call a saying for L322 and the best place to ask is on this excellent site, god I can't wait to be back.

The td6 is a great lump and is rather pokey once it's remapped
They can suffer from injector issues but that's about it

Turbos are known to fail, but that's probably because of lack of mainframe of the crankcase filter

Like mine, sweet V8, warms up in seconds, doesn't wake everybody up when i start it, Lpg kicks in in around a minute and by jingo, pence per mile drops to less than TD6, Oh, did i mention the 'aural' sex ???

The Navara engine is an exception, bad oil flow. Diesel engines are far more reliable than any petrol engine as a general rule. There is a report of an old Gardner 5 cylinder diesel engine, that runs a generator on some island in the tropics,that apart for being stopped for maintenance and service, oil change filter Etc. Has been running 24/7 for 34 years.

If it's that noisy, then the diesel is quieter
