What is the procedure advised by Land Rover when the head gasket has gone and needs to be replaced, can anyone advise on the proper action that is to be taken when head gasket is to be changed.??

What exactly needs to be changed/replaced when it is being done, so i can ensure it is done properly, as i have my Freelander 1.8 XEI booked in at my local garage to have it done next week.

I have been told by my local service dealer garage that the engine has to be degunked inside the water pipes, etc.. head gasket to be changed (obviously), dowls need to be changed, head bolts need to be changed, ans also the cambelt why they are at it.!!

Is this all correct.?? or is there something else that also needs to be attended to.??

The price i have been quoted for this is £480 + V.A.T does that sound about right.??

Well with head off if its got any pitts where the liners sit the gasket will go again also you need to make sure the liners arnt spinning in the block if the head is pitted you can get them skimmed and i believe its paynes do a spacer gasket to go with original gasket,for the worse case.yes you need head bolts and a few gaskets like exhaust downpipe, You also need to get the blanking thermostat to go in old thermostat housing or just break the guts out the old thermostat and get new rubber o ring to fit, and buy replacement cooling hoses this is a mod that has thermostat built in this was changed to try and overcome blown head gaskets,look on the bright side same engine in MG and they would not pay a penny to owners for blown engine,also last year for 1.8 as ford will be fitting new engine.hope this helps if not SHOUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

checked with the garage and they are doing every thing that LR recommends for a head gasket change..
