Has anyone fitted one of these? I have a friend who has and I was amazed at the difference it made. He is claiming 40mpg but I am not so sure. He has de catted and EGR'd it too. He reckons the pump had to be adjusted. Anyone know if this is the case? I have just ordered one so I need to know.

Sorry MHM just lazy I know. Just trawled through the threads on the subject and no one mentions wether you need to adjust the pump or not. I just want to know if its something I could do or is it best left well alone. The question about wether they are any good has varied responses. I have seen the results on a similar vehicle first hand and have ordered an induction kit.

is it a full induction kit you are getting or just the replacement filter
 
Its the cone shaped filter that replaces the airbox and theres a flexi hose that brings cool air up to the filter.
 
should see a little improvement with it-nothing spectacular.
that hose should be placed low down on the bumper to draw in cold moist air-not much point in doing that on a landy! behind the grill will be just as good.

i fitted a K&N force feed kit to my MGZS (slightly different i know!) one where that hose has sum gubbins in to squash the air or so it said then straight through into the filter. that made quite i big improvement to the power. the point to my rambling on is - i got more power but the MPG actually got worse!

This is my point because I know someone with the same disco as me who had one fitted in conjunction with de catting, EGR blank and a small adjustment on the injector pump. The difference was amazing. It really has a lot of low down power it didn't have before. So what I really wanted to know is:

What is the adjustment?
How do I do it or is it a specialist job?

I have already de catted and blanked the EGR
 
Would you believe it. Got the kit today. All boxed and marked up as LR disco 300TDI. Pulled the airbox out and fitted all the hardware, brackets and pipes etc. Then it says ' push the filter on to the steel tube' easier said than done! no way was it going on. It was a good 5mm smaller than the 70mm OD on the tube! Phoned the 'helpline' at K&N and was told to measure it - sure enough wrong filter. They said I should phone the retailer and they would sort it out. I got it from Paddocks and they wanted me to send them the erroneous filter (at my expense) and then they would order a new kit and compare the filters and then probably a week or 2 later send me the right filter. Not impressed. I rang K&N and had a good moan about customer service etc and they finally agreed to send me the new one out.

Nothing is simple is it?
 
New filter on. Sounds good and a definite improvement in power especially lower down. Just been to Liverpool and back at a steady 65-70 and it still only managed 29mpg.

Hi revjames, I'm really interested in what you've had done.

Was tinkering with mine today and found that I have a cat (not really a cat, a particle filter) and wondered if you had removed yours.

Also I'm going to do the K&N thing, what pump tweaks have you had done? What differences do you find when driving? The fuel consumption will be interesting. Are they the sort of thing often seen on here? Is your vehicle EDC or not?

If it is EDC, were the "tweaks" done with a chip, or some work done on the pump?

Hi Dave

Firstly, more low down power, less need to change down and definitely more acceleration. However noisier and the turbo whistle is more pronounced. I reckon if I drive as I have done it will be better on fuel. However, because it sounds better and goes better I know I will be tempted to use the increase in power!

As far as mods go, the original exhaust system had a cat on it. The system was replaced but using a defender downpipe instead of the cat front section. Secondly EGR taken off and binned. Thirdly K&N 57i Induction kit fitted. Fourthly as I was having it serviced, I got them to do the final part of the package they call the 'performance upgrade' which they do by completeing the above three steps and also pump adjustments. The whole package costs £200 but I now only needed the pump adjustments.

As far as the actual adjustments go, as far as I know the timing is slightly adjusted and the pump pressure increased slightly.

I am going to Brighton next week (350 miles) so I will let you know if theres any change in economy. I went to Liverpool last week and stuck at a steady 65 - 70 and only got 29mpg.

Hi revjames, that's a brilliant response. My Disco is a '98 with EDC, it has had the EGR blanked off the intercooler pipe changed, it currently has a cat in the downpipe so I was going to replace that with a downpipe from Paddocks without a cat.

She runs well but you never know if, with a little money and time, she will run EVEN better. So, as I said I will change the downpipe and go the K&N route and see what that produces.

The funny thing is that with my wife's Tdi 200 I drive that like a granded in an invalid car, but with my Tdi 300 it's quite nice to drive a little quicker - not crazy just a bit quicker.

Re the injection pump I suppose there's nothing I can do (as it's ECU controlled) except change/remap the chip?

I also like the idea of everything running to it's optimum.
 
Don't know about chips and EDC, mines the old fashioned type. The only other mod I am considering is the fan removal but I want to be sure about being able to manually control the A/C fans first.
 
Averages 28mpg on a run. Just took it off and put the old airbox back on and had the pump pressure put back to normal. Will be putting it in the Autotrader next week.
 
Sorry to hear your selling the disco.Ive been following your posts since you bought it last year.When you first got it you were claiming you got 28 point summat per gallon.Since then you had service ,egr blank ,de-cat , k&n filter ,pump tweak ,drove it at steady 65mph result 28 m.p.g.! Makes me wonder if we are kidding ourselfs trying to make these things ecomomical .
 
I think we are kidding ourselves. The best ever was on the way to Minehead when I stuck religiously to 65mph and got 31. The K&N actually seemed to make things worse economically but definitely improved performance. I guess you will never get both performance and economy. As far as selling it goes, I no longer have a boat so that was the main reason for getting it. As much as I enjoy driving it I can't really justify having a car that costs so much to run and maintain.
