Hey Guys

i came on here a couple of years ago as i wanted a Defender. Due to family problems I had to postpone it but i have now bought one. Got it from a mate via Withams auctions. Its in good shape having been refurbed by the Army just before it got demobbed. They put new tyres and wolf wheels on it, new bulkhead and a few other things. Chassis is in lovely shape with no wleding etc. Anyway my question (and worry) is the bulkhead. How can i keep it in this condition? I have read so many horror stories about how they rot but how bad is this? How long can you expect a bulkehead to last. Finally when the Army do a job like fitting a new bulkhead, will it have been done properly? ie primed and protected properely or will they just pop a coat of Nato green on it and put it together? Any thoughts and help appreciated

All best
Shaun

waxoil it now everywhere inside the bulkhead and chassis rail pump in as much as you can and keep doing the chassis every 5 years and the bulkhead every 3 years ish.

if its sound now it will be fine

Thanks for that mate. I will certainly do that. the bulkhead does look like new and its solid. However one spot i did find was on the bulkhead. under the bonnet, drivers side. It was all solid apart from this one spot where there was a soft spot about 1cm round. my finger went through it here for some reason. All solid around this bit too. Very strange as the rest of it is like new.

gee thanks. if i wanted abuse I would just sit in the house with my missus lol

Anyway back to the bulkhead. its ALL solid apart from this one tinmy spot. had my mechanic look at the bulkhead when i got it and he says its like brand new and you can tell its just been done recently.

I know to take door screwa out and squirt waxoyl in there. What about the two rubber bungs either side of the fuse box behind the gear stick? can I put some in there or is that leading to somwhere completley different lol

Hey bud

Just been and had a proper look at this rust spot and its certainly not filler. Its a small rust spot. When you said plastic padding i thought you meant the black plastic padding that is on the bulkhead sidewall by the accelerator pedal. Anyway i pulled this off and its like a friggin sponge. Soaking wet. Luckily the only rust we can find is the small part I mention. the rest is Army Green (gloss) Looks facftory fresh paint on the bulkhead. Anyway ill get the door hinge screws out and spray some Dinitrol in there
