I've just commented on a similar post from a few years back. Basically the car jerks when the accelerator is depressed or released. I've been told transfer box by a mechanic. But I've read the other post on here. Any ideas? It is only occurring in low gears at a low speed.
 
This can be caused by the hi-low switch too on the transfer box if it's stuck in low even if the gear is in high or a short o earth on that circuit cos then it's a different fuel map in force which is more "agressive" at low revs, for that you have to check the hi-low input with tester
 
This is a disco 1 which I assume is the same. I can't find the plunger. And where abouts on the transfer box is the switch?
 
Would a duff transfer box cause this? With diff locked it doesn't jerks at all... Also can you have high range and low range diff lock? When not driving with diff locked I assume I'm in high range all the time?

you can have diff lock in either its a separate function to hi and low,you can engage stood or moving as long as you have no wheels spinning,its possible center diff is worn, you can check by jacking a front and rear wheel up hand brake off and rock both props in opposite directions feeling for play in the center diff
 
Where is the centre diff situated. I'm aware you have the rear and front diff in line with the wheels. Sorry I'm a complete novice to 4x4s and landrovers.

in the transfer box between front and rear prop which is why you can feel excessive play by counter rotating the 2
 
OK so if there's play then that could be what is causing the jerking? And would explain why it doesn't do it with diff lock on. Would it be a new transfer box? Or shall I just put up with it?

Sounds to me as if the centre diff planet gear and sun, (side gear), thrust washers are worn allowing gears to ride over each other causing jerking.
When centre diff lock is engaged this takes those planet gears out of play giving a smooth drive.
Check the centre diff/transfer case oil for metal splinters.
Don't just put up with it, it will become undriveable.
And yes, you may need another reco transfer case.
 
OK so I've had a look underneath. I haven't jacked it up but there is a lot of movement in the front prop. As in I can twist it a quarter of a turn. There is also slight movement where the extension bit is. Up and down. There is the same movement on the rear prop when the handbrake is off. Does this mean your diagnosis were correct?

A quarter turn of a driveshaft is not unusual in a high mileage vehicle, there are lots of splines etc that all have backlash, and some movement in transfer case output shafts is not necessarily unusual.
Is it possible to get the vehicle to someone experienced with Landies to be able to observe your problem first hand, it may be the best way to have it diagnosed, I will still stand by the centre diff thrust washers wear being the issue, I have seen it before.

Was thinking throttle cable/linkage sticking. Had similar but was more of delay. Red oil into sheath took care of it. Monday morn thought. Hope is not xfer box.
