I had to replace the start on my V8i Discovery and when I got the old one off found that the end of the casting (shroud around the gear wheel) had fractured and parts of it had dropped into the bell housing, jamming the flywheel.

What does anyone think om my chances of being able to retrieve these bits without an engine-out/gearbox-split ?

Anyone else ever had this happen to them?

To be honest I would split them drop the gearbox and have a good look, would also let you see if its done any other damage, and properly clean it out.

That's what I was afraid of. I don't have the facilities to split them at home.

I'll try and fish out the broken bit first - maybe it's stayed in one piece - else otherwise it'll have to go off to the garage.
