I am buying a largish 4x4 to carry some tools and equipment in the rear. 100% diesel and will be a manual as I need to keep the MPG up !!

Just how reliable are landrover Aircfon systems?? I realy will only buy if it is working etc. Also as its more "van" I have many options to create storage in the rear. So its better than a normal 5 door. I will go and see it soon. any ideas what you reccon I should pay?? they will take offers away from ebay.

I was going down the pajero route. but saw too many that are in a bad way. I am hoping that if the AC realy works and I get it serviced by a good but cheap (!!) local Disco guy (there is a 4 x 4 place near me in Arnos grove, london, "Scorpion" ???

Fit if required some better road type tyres then this could be ideal for my work. Also if I realy can achieve 25 mpg + I will be happy. Might try the cooking oil trick !! did in my Pug but it was terrible to start on a cold day when th eoil was too thick !!

Hi luke , I got my first 300Tdi about 3 years ago , sold it to my brother last year and got another 96 ES with air con etc and have really enjoyed driving them . I wanted a 7 seater and also as I'm 6' 2'' headroom was important .I find the high driving position excellent both in traffic and on country roads and also the gearing is such that at 60 mph the engine is only doing about 2250 rpm . I drove a Pajero for 3 mths and at 60 it was almost at 3000rpm and you would be conscious of the engine revving.
I don't go off road much but my brother does on all kinds of forest tracks which have been torn up by timber lorries etc and he has not got stuck yet - he is really impressed with its ability and has often got through when other 'orientals' got badly stuck trying to follow.
They have a very spacious feel inside and I really appreciated the air con last summer and wouldn't be without it again .
I get approx 32/33 mpg which I think is very good - driving mostly on country roads , not much traffic .
If you have someone local who is familiar with Discoveries it would be excellent - they are fairly straightforward but good maintainance is important . Good luck .
