Had a new windscreen on Thursday done at work and not sure if the guy took the wipers off. Would he have?

I have since got a knocking noise from the blades and I think this may be the rocking of the blades when they change direction. It doesnt allways happen but is loud when it does.

It also appears both wipers are sitting slightly high now, they dont return to horizontal but about 10degress above.

Is it likely that the guy has had the wipers off and simply put them back on slightly off.

or

Is this consistent with wiper mechanisms going etc. I dont want to pull the wiper motor etc out if this noise is relativly normal sometimes with wiper direction change.

2004 110 CSW 78k miles. Wouldnt expect wiper mech to be gone at this?

Knocking can be the end of the spring/cable drive as it moves side to side in the clamp that holds the end of the cable tube and wiper spindle cog.

Mine did til I took out the cable, cleaned it up and gave it all a good squirt of 3in1.

Mind you mines a Series so twas easy....you'd have to strip the top of the dash off yours to do the same

Oh....and yes I imagine he took the wipers off and put them back in a slightly different position

If I take both arms off and run the motor in the cab and here no noise do you think Id be safe to assume motor is good or will the lack of wiper and therefore load mean the motor will run sweet anyway.

I really dont want to be pulling the motor mech apart for fun as you say I need a lot of dash out to do it.

I would think its a brand new screen, and it's maybe in need of a good clean with window cleaner. Check the wipers are not hitting the window rubber anywhere. Take the wipers off and put them back where they were. While they are off check the drive spines have not come loose or have any play in them and the wiper blades are not flapping about on the hinges.

I doubt the mechanism is suddenly shot. The only joint that can wear and clunk is at the motor end. The banging from the screen area is probably not the mechanism.

Sounds good to me cheers.

got a new stone chip tonight after new screen fitted Thursday aswell!

Ill get arms off tomorrow and have a play cheers for comments.

Watch that the little spring retaining clip doesn't fall out as you lift the arm off.

Look at the grooved splines inside the end of the wiper arm and check they havent smoothed off. Same goes for the splines on the wiper part that it fits back onto. Replace with new parts as necessary.

As already stated, I think that it is fair to say that as this has only occured after the new screen was fitted you can discount the wiper mechanism and instead just concentrate on the wiper spindle adaptor. It is the work of 2-minutes to make sure the adaptor is fitted correctly and the grub-screw is tight. If the arms are still out of line then just remove them and re-fit in the correct position, easy.

heard a final crunch noise and they have died this morning on way to work. Im sure I can hear the motor still working so somewhere the mechanism is fooked. A bit of a coincidence that it has happened imediatly after the new screen was fitted. Wonder if the fitter has over tightened the wiper arm retaining nuts and maybe applied a torque into the motor mechanism that has damaged something?
