Price for a relaible car = priceless

Price for owning a Landrover Discovery TD5 ES (2001 with 90K miles)

New clutch with labour = £500
New air pump = £400
New fly wheel for clutch = £300
Labour costs = £500

And the F**cking car is only worth £10,000 at max.:mad:

That's it. I've had it. I off to get a big Japaneese 4x4.

Maintaining my TVR dosent cost this much.

During my driving life i have owned Saab's, Ford's, Mercs, Beamers, Audi's, and i have never had to the same trouble that my disco has given me. I have only owned the car for 6 months. Oh and by the way, the car needed a new fuel injector (£600 with labour).

So this is a message for all those people that are about to submit a post entitled "i am thinking of buying a discovery, what do you think?"

My answer to you is, if your loaded, don't mind your car being off the road (in a garage i mean) and regard money as that stuff that just gets in the way and are looking for a way of burning wads of it. Then a LandRover discovery is truely the car for you. I hope your very happy together.
 
On the contrary, I have owned 6 Disco's now the current one from new, a 2001 TD5 85,000 on the clock. Apart from standard service fees just about to pay my first mechanical expense of £300 for a new fuel pump.

None of the others gave me a bit of trouble either. Guess I am just one in a million and also guess the expense will start to increase as the mileage and age are beginning to creep up. Hey Ho! time to start saving for a new one!

yu got off lightly - i just finished forking out £4K on my V6 hippo in a year - and its only worth £5K

maybe we could make one good one outta both?

first orf yer clutch is something that will wear out on any car. if you had it checked over by a good mechanic before you bought it he would have been able to tell you it was on its way out.
same with yer air pump
flywheel...if it was needing replaced then the chances are the clutch was well ****ed and caused scoring or worst on the face of the flywheel. which would have been avoided if you'd not driven with a slipping clutch.

whats the extra 500 squid labour for??

apart from the air pump it seems you bought a vehicle with a ****ed clutch and drove it till it died completely, whereas if you'd had it properly checked before hand and not driven with a knackered clutch you'd still have 1300 quid in yer pocket.

normally I am a bleedin heart liberal type who likes to go for the sympathy/all mates together type of approach but I have to say that it looks like you bought a Disco with a cattled clutch in the first place - you could have quite easily had the same scenario with your TVR or the beamer, merc etc that you list - Sure, you have my sympathy for the troubles and expense that you are having but it sounds like you inherited some problems with the car when you bought it.

10k is a lot of money to splash out (is to me anyways) a few quid on an AA / RAC inspection might have been a good move (hindsight is a great thing tho aint it!)

hope its all sorted now and that you get to enjoy the money you have thrown at it
