I never have any success getting the correct part for any car I've owned. O always seem to have the version they only made 3 of with completely different parts to the others. A mate that does his own spanners get has the same trouble
 
My understanding is that the stub axles and bearings need to match (older style together / newer style together but not to mix). However, I thought either new or old half shafts would fit fine - obviously different end nut arrangement and drive flange but that's it.
 
I just called Paddocks to get their point of view but it wasn't a lot of help. The geezer said he was only aware of one type of hub for series 3, my parts book shows 576844 and FRC3875. He advised to wait and see what the new bearing kit is like when it arrives (less hassle for him on a Saturday morning).
I have looked at the old stub axle. I can get away with the thread but there is no avoiding the wear where the outer bearing sits.
Options
1. JB weld the pitting. I know that's a bodge but i'm a bone idle slacker at heart so I'm prepared to consider it.
2. Find a second hand, old style stub axle.
3. Get the new stub axle turned down to accept the old style bearings.
If I can use basically what I have and not start upgrading other parts it will save me a lot of money that I don't have.
What would you do?

Deep seated psychological problem with that. The (what we'd now call Year 7) school trip was to Lincoln (from Derby) and the dreaded task was to write the trip up with a minimum number of words. This was the headmaster's pet project and he marked them himself, as he had from the day that he founded the school.

Apparently, really big gaps between words are not acceptable. I can never go back to Lincoln.

Fair enough. We mustn't open old wounds.
 
It seems that finding good used stub axles is not that easy either. Paddocks recommended Sam's seats and spares but she has sold all hers during the show season. Sam was really helpful though and has given me another contact to try. There are some for sale on eBay but the seller doesn't respond to messages. I wanted it back on it's wheels next week while i'm off work but that's starting to look impossible.
 
In the end I have had the stub axle turned down to accept the old bearings. The machine shop have called to say that it is ready to collect so tomorrow we will see if it's a success. I think the rest of its dimensions are the same as the original one so unless I have forgotten something else vital we've maybe cracked it.
 
The work that the machine shop did is absolutely perfect! An absolutely spot on fit.
I started reassembling only to have the last thread give up when fitting the driven flange. Bugger.
