Hi All

I come to the unfortunate conclusion that I have a cracked block and so it looks like I will need to replace my engine.

Can anyone tell me how heavey the V8 engine is as I am going to do the work myself, but I need to know what size engine crane to hire or buy to get the job done.

I'll second that.
Depends if you strip the heads and other parts of the top end off first obviously.
Some years ago, myself and a mate lifted a 3.5. V8 out of a Rover P6 after stripping the top end off, it wasn't too bad. We also refitted the short block without a hoist or blocks.
It's the crank that is the heavy lump, the bare block is deceptively light.
Just make sure you get a crane with the legs that will pass between the front wheels.

Used to throw the V8 blocks around easily years ago they don't weigh a lot. Then again i am a big lad have picked up and carried the complete Mini engine and box many times and that weighs around 330 pounds.
Come to think of it there has been that much metal removed from the old blocks to get 4.6 that they possibly need to be on a string to stop them floating up to the roof these days. :D:D:D
 
Thanks guys, I will go for a standard 1 ton crane then and make sure i measure between the wheels first.
 
I would go for tonne and half know it don't weight that much but when you extend the arm which you will have to the weigh limit drops to 500kg then 250kg.
Just bear that in mind!!

If you hire it and bend it they MAY/WILL charge you!!

had an idea

why not leave the heads, plugs etc. in palce and fill it with helium. you would probably be able to get it out one-handed:D:D:D
