I picked one up last night for £20. Its only done 76k miles, but before I go through all the hassle of fitting it, I would like to make sure its ok.
What do I need to look for reg ware n tare..?
If it is worn out, how hard are they to make good..? Do I need special tools..?
Transfer box too..

they need special tools, you may find the odd box you can get away with but majority you wont,usually when you recon one you replace the 5 main bearings and the 5 baulk rings ,the main issues with lt77 was the wear on mainshaft splines ,1st and 2nd gear selection on h suffix boxes and excessive endfloat noticed on input shaft ,check endfloat both ends and try turning input shaft with one hand while putting some force on rear splines in each gear ,transfer box can be done without special tools check it the same in both hi/low while rotating both out put flanges in diff lock ,then counter wise when out feeling for play in diff gears if you lived neare id lend you the tools but cornwalls a tadge far

Thanks James.. Sounds way out of my league, so I think I will take a chance n fit it straight in my disco. Its got to be better than the box I have in.
I have a lottery gearbox, you just don't know what gear you are gonna get when you change up or down..

is the gear stick just floppy as that may be fixable with box in situ ie bias plate ,yoke

I think so, but I am not sure how floppy or not they are meant to be..

should return positively from either side to 3rd 4th alignment and haver no feel of play when selecting

Will take notice when I am next in it, but I think it just flops about.. ooh err mrs. I can compare it with the new box I suppose. See if there is a difference..

worth looking at if it doesnt crunch going into gear and box isnt noisy and may be fixed by removing center consol

It does crunch if I go from 4th to 2nd too early, but I have changed my driving style and it does not crunch any more. When I changed the clutch cylinders, I had loads of hassle bleeding the system and it chrunched all the time (esp going into reverse) but it suddenly cleared the air lock and all is better now, its just going into 4th from 3rd, I sometimes get 2nd. I will have a looksy at the spare one, so I can see whats what easier..

My gear selecter in the car does feel sloppy compared to the new one I got. Can I easily change the bias plate over from the new box into the one in me car..?
I started taking the top off the new box but decided it better to ask before I went further.
Is the bias plate the next bit to undo in this pic..?

id have just swapped complete tops its easier to put springs back on ,but bias plate is already unbolted it sticks up behind the stick and holds lever down ,set it with the whole gear levceron so that it springs back to exact 3rd 4th alignment
