The last 6 weeks i have had to use the series diesel every day to visit my Mom in hospital, a round trip of 120 miles. Very slow and noisey but got me around at 29/30 mpg

Thats not bad, the best I get out of mine is 35-38mpg on a run, doing around 50/60 mph

You got overdrive to get 35 mpg? I may start to look at sound proofing when my ears recover

Under the bonnet is a cobble up. Series 2 petrol 3 bearing block with diesel top end. I get some surging over bumps and may fit a cable throttle instead of rod linkage, has anyone done this?

No, no overdrive, but it came into the world as a straight 6 petrol, so maybe there's different ratios somewhere? I did rebuild the engine very carefully, and fiddled with the pump a lot to get it running real nice.

On the noise issue, if you get rid of as many vibrations as possible, it makes it a lot quieter..
