    I am about to purchase a 1999 diesel freelander (5 door).
Should i be able to hear the turbo when driving ?
Is there any common faults that i should be looking out for ?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated before some second hand car salesman gets this years holiday budget in his back poscket !

Best thing to do chap is go down to the freelander forum and read the posts. This should help your decision.

Briefly put about Freelanders,

Never buy one made before 2001, never buy a petrol engine because it will fail at 50,000miles (1.8 or 2.5 V6), and always have full main dealer service history. And pay for a RAC inspection.
