Hi I have a 95 auto tdi was just checking is diff lock worked it did put it bk into neutral fine put gearbox into drive and nothing only had it a week is there any tricks to getting it bk to normal thanks

why did you put it into neutral difflock and hi/low are totally seperate functions eventhough they use the same lever ,diff lock can be applied without altering ratio .linkage is probably loose

It's where the diff lock lever has been since I bought it and it drove fine is the linkage the one which runs down drivers side of box ?

yes difflock linkage goes straight down hi/low rearwards apart from checking nuts are tight ,loose pivot bushes pins sit through been worn ,adjusment is by winding in/out pivot eye bolt ,hi/low has a 13mm spanner size nuts near rear can be adjusted or cam ring loosened and mover around a spline or 2 at lever end

By what Ive read I'm being dumb can someone tell me what position the diff lock should be in for normal road driving

Well it shouldn't be in neutral unless you just sit in the car and pretend to drive! The lever should be to the right and down i.e Hi Range and diff lock off..

over to the rhs side for normal non locked driving ,selector in box is spring operated sometimes theres not enough lever movement to get it to engage ,testing is best done by jacking one front wheel up and getting someone to turn it while you operate lever wheel will lock once diff lock engaged

With an autobox select (N) before moving the transfer lever backward or forwards to the required position, if there is no drive when you have selected (D) then the transfer box hasn't re-engaged fully and still sitting in the t box neutral .
Give the transfer lever a hard pull to the right, so out of difflock and into high you will find it easier if the t box oil is warm.
"what position the diff lock should be in for normal road driving" only one 'disengaged'

To the right and towards the driver would maybe be a better description.

Its probably just the linkage thats rusted tight...my disco had never used diff lock for 15 years..i opened passenger door and gently pulled the lever back and forth towards me...it helped with a bit of grease squirted down via the already ripped gearstick leather cover..its a good idea to engage difflock once a week to prevent it seizing up again.

Best get the release spray out and drown it for a week to free it !! Thanks for all your quick advice sure it won't be last time I ask for help !!

if your struggling to engage/disengage hi/low or d/lock then try rocking it on the gears if you get me? when i got mine it was a bit stiff, through usage its free'd up but if it ever didn't wanna go in on its own just push it back into high (or which ever your trying to use) and release the clutch to biting point - it should just slide in...

Sorted it drowned it in release rocked the lever from passenger side left it 30 mins then did same and voila fully working
