Hi all i'm a new boy an just about got this site sorted[i think] well my beloved 2003 td4 2door auto driven with no problems for bout a year now, has turned nasty on me, she stopped on the m4 3 times in one day[bitch] after bout 20 mins of me dying for a [****] she started , but went into ems light on [if i like you i'll try & get you home mode] well i'm getting a bit twitchy with her now . . . fore all this started she has turned into a reluctant stater [i might start or i might not depends on me really] we are gonna fall out big time. . . well before all this she would start as quick as a ferrit up a trouser leg. . . don't know why she's turned on me cos i still dote on her . . . any one got any clue's

The first thing to check is the fuel filter,the symptoms you describe with it dying and then re-starting after a short while indicate a fuel issue especially the starting from cold problems.

Its a cheap part to buy and easy to fit, that would be my first thing i would change on a diesel. Dont presume the dealer will always change it as part of the service as quite often corners are cut and if the car has low mileage for its age they may not have changed it.

being 03 model the car should have 1 fuel pump and its just in front of the back offside wheel,when you turn the ignition on if you put your hand underneath you should feel the pump running,LR did have issues with the filters being put in round the wrong way causing bad flow and sometimes the filters collapse,the filter is also based in the same place 2 10mm bolts and 1 trim clip brings it down dont pull to far as there is an earthing wire at the back only 2 quick release pipes to disconect then its down,the td4 also has problems with loosing high pressure as the injectors leak to much fuel back sometimes when the injectors go but cars normally stop and dont restart,just check it only has 1 pump because slightly earlier td4 had 2 pumps and the fuel filter is in a different place,look at front engine filter and 1 pump on right hand side at back hope this helps.
