Ok firstly as i am new to this so hello.
Oh also go easy on me as my knowledge is not on par with technical terms.

I guess ill start by getting you up to date on with what i am doing.

Start
i have recently bought my self a 1988 defender 90 2.5td engine.
i am just after Christmas taking the old engine out and putting a 300tdi engine in so could you let me know parts i need to get it to fit ie if the gear box needs changing and other parts, whilst i am doing the engine conversoin i plan on putting a new bulk head in so ide like to know which ones would fit, and were i can get one without spending too much money.

another niggle bit is the low ratio keeps slipping out of gear any ideas?

many thanks

dont buy an engine, you are better off buying a complete donor car, that way you get most of what you need, including gearbox, transferbox, rad, intercooler etc.
If you do a search you will find details of a replacment engine mounting that allows you to bolt in a 300tdi into a td chassis. Start reading projects on this site , ok, and introduce yourself in the relevant section also. Good Luck !

sorry for not formally introducing my self.

i have browsed the forums but i was just looking for a list on what is needed exactly for the conversion.

does any bulk head from even the newer defenders fit?

I am just doing a 200tdi conversion into my 1989 2.5TD.... Goodluck, Google will become your best friend after xmas....

oh and welcome :bounce:

because people say they are the better engine, slight more fuel efficient, easier to convert into a 2.5td. and for some reason i had my head stuck on a 200tdi. I picked up a truck with a snapped timing belt, had a lot of offloading bits on it all for £500.. the mrs wasn't too pleased one thursday evening when i popped to the bank to get the money out and a truck turned up outside.. but she isn't too fussed now its gone and I'm in profit not to mention i have the engine still... i was replacing the timing belt and clutch ect anyway, the only damage it had done was 5 of the 8 pushrods were bent, i replaced all 8 for about 20 quid...

Fitting a 300tdi inst as hard as a lot of people make out. I did mine in a weekend earlier this year but I did buy all the bits needed from Steve parkers as I wanted it to be upto the job and look good. I've seen a lot off people extend the pipe work with other bits of pipe but tbh the more connections their are the more chance of a leak. Also I recommend buying the engine mounts off Steve parkers as they are designed to be a straight fit and use the bulk head support bolts to lign them up so you can't get them in the wrong place.

+1 for buying a donor car...

I just bought 2 discos for less than the weigh in price, a 200 and a 300 :D There really are lots of them about if you know where to look.

You are only about 100 miles from Lancashire and I've been offered 5 in as many months. I'm having these two though but he needs a head gasket and turbo fitting to his mitsubishi so I'm sorting that for him and getting them free now :D Also he's chucking in 20 assorted landy wheels and a defender roof plus some other bits. I'll pass offers on from now on if I don't want them. I know where there was another disco1 300TDi a couple of months ago for 350-400 that's just failed it's MOT but was otherwise in quite good condition but didn't have any money spare.

yeah i should start looking a bit further away. i'd need to sort out transporting it though.. which can turn into a pita.

Thing is, most of the hassle is loading and unloading it..... That only happens once if it's 10 miles or 100 miles. If you have a vehicle trailer its easy enough.

i don't, but next year i'll make a bigger effort to get myself sorted out, honest ;)
