Hi all, I have recently purchased a Land Rover Discovery TD5 2001 Automatic, and hope I have done the right thing.
My main hobby is showing and refurbishing Stationary Engines (Barn Engines), the problem I had was my van Citroen Relay with a stationary engine, generator, fuel, spares and my caravan hooked on the back is great on the road but once it reached the fields we display in slightest bit of moisture on the ground then no traction, call the tractor to pull me around.
I got a bit fed up with this situation and that is why I bought a Disco.
We (wife and I) used the disco for the first time this weekend, put the Engine in the back of the Disco along with tools, ramps, spares, fuel and hooked the caravan up, All looked well, the active suspension raised the rear to the correct height with little effort and off we went, the journey was about 96 miles and I must admit we had expected a bit better performance from the Disco's 2.5 ltr engine, tended to struggle a bit to maintain 60 MPH with cruise control on or off, then after around 60 miles the Transmission Oil Temperature light kept coming on, when I got the chance I eased off the power and after a few minuets the light went off then came back on after I put the power back on.
We got there OK and as most know on Saturday it rained all day so the ground was at its worst. Hooked the Disco up to come home and was great to glide across the field with no assistance or effort in low gear.
On the journey home the same thing happened with the Transmission Oil Temperature light, so now I am a little worried that there may be a problem with the Automatic Gearbox.
I live in Tamworth Staffs, Can someone help to solve the mystery of the Transmission Oil Temperature light. at the moment I have mixed feelings as to weather my decision was right to buy a Disco.

:welcome2: A defender pullin your old motors would look more professional, instead of a city slicker tryin to give the wrong idea.:D:D

Thanks John for the welcome, You might be right about the defender but at my age I have tried to combine a little comfort with practicality.

Have you done a similar journey with less weight ( no offence to your wife.....) - did the same thing happen ?

Not checked oil level in the gearbox but will when I can get an able body to assist. and this is the first journey of any significance. Didn't think much of the fuel economy either, reckon it was about 13 to the gallon, Is that normal ??

did 2 100 mile trips in my td5 mostly motorway five people plus caravan and the wifes travel light packing not! got just under21 to gallon steady 65 mph

Thanks John for the welcome, You might be right about the defender but at my age I have tried to combine a little comfort with practicality.

Old timers just get tougher with age,we add a little cushion here and there, and go to bed alittle earlier at nite:D:D

That looks like low fuel economy to me, even hauling/towing. Did you feel the car struggling with the weight ? I would definitely check transmission oil levels, but if they are fine I wonder if the problem might be somewhere else - seriously binding brakes maybe ?

have you checked oil level?is the oil clear and red?wer you towing between 50 and sixty was the box changing up and down a lot? welcome

Not checked oil levels yet, yes was travelling 55 to 60 and the box was changing a lot, sounded like it was changing to top at 55 or locking out at 55 not sure which.

What a great site, Thanks to everyone who has made a comment on this subject, at least I have some idea what to look for. I will keep you updated with what happens.
thanks Syd

always try to tow at 65 on motorway stays in top and keeps you traffic flow.had similar prob with carlton i had before take it 65 and its in top and stays ther but as i said thats on motorway

Thanks for the welcome, I notice you have removed the EGR does it make any difference to performance or economy ??

Was a little bit no much to write home about. The engine note changed slightly seems to pull away at a lower rev before it waould pull away at say 1500revs now it seems to start pulling between 1300 mine is auto so they are a bit slower I think.

so it seem the lowend torque might improve abit

MPG I put £50 in and get about 200 miles but testing it at the moment as i was losing Diesel through the Fuel Presure Regulator that i changed the otherweekend so see how that goes Replacing the FPR has certinaly changed the car seems more responsive

I didn't get round to cleaning the intercooler as the egr was removed in my Lunch hour but I belive the helps as well as well as the big siver bit the egr connects to that goes to the engine (can't belive I've forgotten wat it's called:eek::eek:)
If you do remove the egr soak the bolts in wd40 so much easier to remove
