I've had a search on here and haven't had much luck...
My dad's p38 (4.6 thor) has an issue. He rang me to say that he's stopped and water was leaking past the cap and that the cap was loose. So he tightened the cap and the temp gauge went up but then back down again.
So I said, once it's cooled down, see if you can take the cap off. After an hour he took the cap off, a little overflow and then the water went right down. He topped up with about 2 litres. I then suggested running it with the cap off and blowing through the breather pipe that goes to the rad. Then, with it running without the cap on it started spurting water out of the header tank like a volcano. Ran like this for about 5 mins spitting water out and had to turn off in the end. Got it recovered back as I wasn't sure and didn't want to do any damage. I know of core plugs and head gasket doing this sort of thing or am I missing something? Any help would be appreciated!

Have a look at the spark plugs see if one looks steam cleaned if yes probably gasket. also make sure the stat is working.

Common head gasket blow into a gallery.

Check the plugs as said above.
