i put a brand new alternator on 9mths ago, and now i can hear a bit of a whistle and a bit of a gritty crunch noise (which stops very quickly),coming from the belt area.
have the bearings gone already?
is this common?

take the belt off, spin the alternator and see what it sounds like. what make is the alternator?

will do in morning.
will take the belt off and check for any play in that and the other pulleys.
dont know the make of it .got it from p38 spares and hes not had any faulty ones come back so i'll have a closer look tomorrow.

i took the belt off today and the fan wobbles like its about to fall off, so ineed to change the water pump.

least it aint your alternator

if i'd had the part i'd be up to my elbows in coolant by now. but its sunday, and the best i could do was order the part

Don't overtension the belt when re-fitting otherwise another bearing will go.

hasn't it got a self tensioning pulley that i slacken off with a 15mm spanner to get the belt off. and then springs back to tension the belt.
how can i overtension the belt?

Make sure it doesn't move when tightening it again and effectively 'wrapping' it up.
