How should a landy with transmission hand brake be tested for its MOT? When I just had mine done he accelerated and pulled the hand brake as you would with foot brake. Surely that will damage half shafts or something? Luckily the hand brake doesn't work properly so no damage was done (failed the MOT for it though). Is this normal testing for a Land Rover?

They did the same with mine which worried me as well. It passed but they said it pulled to one side! Baffled me a bit.

they dont normally test them apart from cable operation and travel where i go,its not a good idea to apply handbrake while vehicles moving and is unlikely to want to pull up straight

Ok thanks for the replies. Having the handbrake sorted over the weekend so hopefully will sort it and it wont get fooked when its retested

That's the only way you can do it if they haven't got the right rollers to do it on a brake tester

Rubbish

What's wrong with applying Handbrake and then slowly lifting foot off clutch to see if the handbrake holds the vehicle back.

or park on a slope or even a set of car ramps and apply hand brake.

Or whats wrong with putting front wheels on a car lift and raising front end of landy slightly.

There's loads of ways to do it..

Because the tester they have to use is a accelerometer so it has to have some speed for it to work

So really most MOT stations are not equipped to test it properly? Bit bad really considering how many landys there are.

nuts, the guy that did mine used the acellerometer for the normal brakes, the hanbrake test involved him putting the handbrake on whilst the other guy shoved it.

Not heard about that one as we've always done it on our rolling road, we only have to use the decelerometer for quads

The guy who tested my landy hand brake just checked that it pulled up without hitting the stop, he tested the brakes by driving and slamming them on. not to scientific imo

last car I took for a test the guy spent half hour telling me what a ****e wife and ****e life he had

so I politely said, are we testing this KA today then,
he said,
oh yeh, and put it over the pit...

got to MOT my disco again "one day"
my handbrake works very well, too well, it sticks on in the cold weather when you first use it on the day, so I just roll it gentley back and forewards to it goes bang and drive off...
its fine all day after that...

a bit scared of going back to my pet tester again, in case he`s been chucked out...lol

You might want to adjust it then to stop that from happening, anyway I might say something when it goes for the retest next week. Last thing I want is a snapped shaft or a damaged UJ. It wasn't exactly a 'rolling' hand brake test it was more of a boot it hand brake test

. It failed on the fact that the handbrake didn't hold the vehicle and that it had no resistance in the upward travel or something. I've always had trouble with the handbrake but never really bothered to sort it as I don't live anywhere hilly. At least it will be sorted soon. Hopefully it wont cost too much.
