LT77 box, I want to change all my oils. Not quite sure about the filter for the gearbox, where is it situated? and is it as simple as undoing something and replacing it?

Thanks

Dunno about gearbox filters. But I've just done my diffs.

I made the job a lot easier by nicking the wifes measuring jug and funnel from the kitchen, putting 2.5' of tube on the funnel and with the other end of the tube in the filler hole pouring the Haynes recomended amount of oil into the funnel. I held the funnel in the workmate to do the back, had to add a bit more to reach the level plugs. It was a lot easier than pratting about with 500cc squeezy bottles.

I'll do the same with the transmission box getting at it by taking the panel out from between the seats.

Machine Mart do a 500cc oil suction gun with flexi pipe. I use one for filling my diffs and my gear/transfer box.

Regards WP.

i got a big syringe from the local cow doctor and glued a bit of flexy pipe on to where the needle went, works a treat!!

last time i did mine in cut a hole in the bottom of the bottle(s) of oil then ran a length of 1/2" hose into the filler hole in the gearbox from the engine bay, attached the nozzle of the bottle to the hole, then let gravity do the rest worked a treat.

Did my transfer box oil today (no snow you see). I was a bit suprised to only get 1/2 a pint of oil out.

Any how filled it up using our lasses kitchen funnel and measuring jug (I'd best clean them in time for doing Sunday dinner), only to find the oil trickling steadily out of the front prop shaft hole.

Haynes dont want you to do anything with the transfer box, except take it to a specialist.

So can anyone tell me if it's a box out job to replace the seal or can it be done on the vehicle? Is it realy a specialist job, if so how much d'you reckon it'll cost.

im fairly sure you can do it in situ. off hand, the seals about 5/10 quid, i think.
there is a LR special puller to get them off, but you can use brute force and stupidity like me.

Yes I've sussed it.

I looked in the manufacturers manual I downloaded of the internet. It's a doddle. Must admit I had a mild panic when I saw the oil ****ing out.

Does anybody know the number/size of the oil seal?

sorry just realised that youve got a defender?
i was on about the disco 1!
poss the same anyway?

(thought i was in the disco forum section).

Yes my plans went for Sunday afternoon, waiting for the snow to go so I can do my oil!

Anywhere to buy oil at good prices? Like a screwfix of the oil world.

I get mine from local car shoperama type place, £10 for 5L ep80/90 similar price for egine oil.

£6.something for 500cc ep90 from Halfords!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now then, I've got to the output shaft oilseal and the output shaft bearing is knackered. Looking in the Land Rover manual the transfer box has to be removed and split to replace it. Anyone know otherwise?

Has anyone an idea how much a recon box will cost?

And 'cos it's 'kin cold out, how much do you reckon it'll cost to pay to have a new box fitted?

Can I someone pass me the Prozac please!!!!!!!!!!!!!
