Having tried everything I could think of to get rid of the clunk on take up, I succumb to pulling the tranny box inspection covers off! The tranny box gears look fine, except the input cog, which along side the output shaft are well and truly shagged! 
Ordered up some new parts to drop a second hand box in, but even they have been soddin expensive! The price of the cross drilled gear int too bad, until you add bearings and a seal kit - then it starts to mount up to near £120 grrrr
