I'm not sure about a turbo failing, but I beleieve the seals can go, resulting in the oil being sucked out of the engine, and so the engine seizing.
Not 100% certain as it was a warranty job, so it was just swapped (the whole engine) and the old one sent back, so we're basing our assumption on the symptoms.
