Hi all, had a diesel leak over the engine of my Freelander-cleaned up as much as I could but is there a risk of the spilt fuel catching fire from the heat of the engine or will it just dry up in time?
Also I was planning on adding Wynns oil leak stop when I do an oil change, do any of you have experience of this product and does it do what it says on the tin?.
Cheers in advance.
Andy

Andy, the best thing to do after an oil or fuel spill is to give the engine a wash with a pressure washer and engine shampoo....car wash nozzle used and if possible, pressure dialled down.

You must be careful not to get water into the electronics or electrical connections. It's also advisable to always carry a good sized fire extinguisher meant for fuel and oil ignited fires.

As for the oil leak treatment, it will all depend on how badly the leak is. I have never used the product you described but after seeing most similar products like Gunk used, it works for small leaks.

For me and I know it will be a challenge with my Defender, better to fix the leak properly. I hate leaks and see them as wounds dripping blood.

I would be inclined to take it to a professional steam cleaner. I am not at all sure I would like to tackle this with domestic kit - and if they ruin the electrics it's down to them. In any case steam is far less likely to cause damage.

What I've done is spray the affected areas with de-greaser and after a while just run a hose over it avoiding any electrics as much as possible, seems to have got rid of the pockets of fuel and after a long tentative test drive all seems to be drying out nicely, advice much appreciated though, many thanks.

spilt diesel very low risk , just spray some gunk, and run some water over it to disperse it a bit , it will dry in time .
Re stop leak products , they are a temporary fix , and when they start to leak again , it will be at a greater rate . So just bear that in mind , as they ruin the seals in the whole system , so its a bigger fix afterwards . HTSH

Thanks mate, sounds like I've done the right thing about the spilt fuel, I'm going to keep an eye on the oil leak, after changing the oil and using a new sump plug washer there's no sign of any leaks yet after a few miles driven, but I guess a small leak can be tolerated, after all it's a Land Rover and it's just marking its territory lol
