I have just bought a freelander 2 (my first Land Rover) which has what looks like factory fitted roof rails. There is only one cross bar I assume because if the sun roof. I want to carry a couple of kayaks but they will only go on the one bar

front straps to the roof? That will scratch it surely. Any help on how to address the problem would be helpful thanks.

You could just get a couple of clamp on bars, I bought mine 2nd hand, didn't cost much and have come in very useful.

The single bar you have is to stop the rails moving inwards. It shouldn't have any weight put on it.

Your FL2 has a sunroof so yer need to buy the 'with sunroof' version of the roof bars. Part numbers below:
