Nagging mrs, clutch issue and a long trip ahead have forced me to say goodbye to my 3 door td4.

I've seen a 5 door 2005 freelander. The guy is prepared to do a good deal for me on mine. Am I correct in thinking the head gasket issues had been resolved on the 2005 freelander s?

Hg is a lot better on the latter models - however they still don't tolerate being badly looked after, one that has had poor maintenance can still be a lemon.

Clutch wearing out could happen on your replacement in short order as well. I would be reluctant to change for the second and third reasons you listed. The first argument obviously carries more weight ( well if you want a quiet life)!!!
