Hi All,

I was hoping for a bit of advice/guidance/help! I recently brought a Freelander 2 2.2 TD4, when I say recently I mean 2 weeks ago! I don't have much knowledge on cars which will become obvious as I carry on...

When I came to start the car today the key got "stuck" in the ignition, the car would not start, lines started running through central screen on the dash board and the air bag lights above my head started flashing as did the four ways though dimly. There was also a clicking noise that kept coming and going. I did try searching the forum for advice on how to retrieve the key to no avail! My uncle came to rescue me, he jump started the car and it started working, I was able to start the car and get the key back. When I got home I turned the ignition off and locked the car using the central locking, usualkynthr wing mirrors fold in however this didn't happen. I have since gone back to the car and the same problem has happened, I think a message about the HDC flashed up but it disappeared to quickly to read.

I am going to be phoning up the garage that I purchased it from tomorrow, does anyone have any ideas what might be happening and what the fix is so that I can ensure that I am not fobbed off. Any help would be really greatly appreciated.

Honestly, I don't know. I brought the car two weeks ago and don't know if it has ever been changed. I'll take it to Halfords tomorrow and see if they can test it. Thank you

If it came from a garage, then take it there. It should be under warranty after just 2 weeks.
 
I think the battery's going flat anorl. When batteries age they don't hold their charge. One way to prove it will start ok is to re-start it not long after yer switched it oft. The battery won't of had time to lose it's charge so it should be able to start it. It doesn't fix the problem but it does prove it will start on it's own without assistance from another vehicle/battery.
 
Thank you all, I had the battery tested today and there was only 16% charge (I think that is what he said.) I had the battery changed and it seems to be working now just worried that something may be draining the battery although it was the original battery and the car was first registered in 2008. The garage that I brought it from said that batteries weren't covered under the warranty!

Batteries don't last forever. Once replaced it should be ok. The ability to hold it's charge degrades over time. I would be surprised if it were the original at 9 years old. No need to worry about something draining it. If yer worried still buy a multimeter and measure the volts across the battery after it's sat for a while.

LR batteries do last well.
My D3 battery was 10 years old when it started giving the HDC message. I fitted a nice high power replacement and the HDC programmes failure warning was banished for good.
