I think it might depend on what sump guard you buy (i've made my own personally) but i know for sure that Mantecs sump guard replaces the whole original unit (it's only a case of unbolting and replacing).
Easiest way to do it is to put the front of the car on ramps, get a mechanics creeper and just wheel yourself out with the guard as soon as all the bolts are undone. Careful though, it's a tad heavy when you're on your back.

I would make you one but the postage might cost more than the things worth from Ireland lol
You'll have to be carefull if you're intending on doing it with a jack, you might want to jack one side at a time and undo the bolts on each side, then when you've got the last bolt off (you'll probably want a few bricks or something underneath the guard so it doesn't fall on you) get from under it pretty quick as you won't want to bash your head on it.
But to be honest i wouldn't advise getting under it with just a jack anyway as it's not safe at all (don't want you getting crushed), you might want to invest in some ramps or axle stands if you intend to start doing work on your freeby.

I bought some strong aluminium off ebay and cut it to the shape of the old plastic guard, but slightly wider so i could bolt it to the original guards aluminium frame. It took about a day to get it perfect without using anyone elses blueprints or anything, just cutting it and bending it to shape to fit. Trial and error really.

The Mantec one is preety expensive, but is a straight swap. I also looked at fabricating one to replace just the plastic bit - well getting someone to do it cos I'm not that clever cutting metal 
Sometimes they do come up on ebay or you could ask a local blacksmith or metal fabricators for a quote.

I actually forgot to say that my dad cut it to shape, i just held it in place. He's neater with a jigsaw than i am.
