right guys and gurls have fitted some bigger wheels and a lift kit but I now need more power any suggestions will do the usual air filter etc but i recon I will need more

Before you even think about more power, how about you sort out the cooling & get that up to scratch first. Plenty of info on here about what you can do & more importantly, why you should do it.

It would cost A LOT of money to convert your engine into a turbo. You're not just talking about the turbo itself, you'd need new ECU, forged pistons, tougher liners etc. Would be an awful lot of work as well. Of course the lump in the Rover 75 turbo and other cars weren't around 160bhp with just a turbo, they'd have had more aggressive cams as well a few other things.
Cheapest and easiest ways to go for now is to fit an alloy 52mm throttle body in place of the 48mm plastic one. Also fit a de-cat pipe to allow her to breathe a bit more (although this is illegal on a road going car). You could then look at cams and verniers, piper do some very nice upgrades.
If that isn't enough, you'll want to go for individual throttle bodies direct to head. This will require a new ECU, but is well worth it in my opinion, and makes the 1.8k lump sound absolutely great!

I have a 50th Anniversary Freelander, which I expect one day to be much admired in a motoring museum, if only I can keep it going. In the meanwhile, the head gasket of the second engine I have put in it has blown. Obviously I am upset and rather than risk another original am considering a different make of engine - probably bigger than 1.8, which seems under-powered for the job. I have read about the V8 transplants, etc, but is there anything that would just slot into the space available? Muchos grassyarse

Ah, sorry, I didn't see a relevant sections page when I registered. Anyway, hello everyone.
I have since discovered that my question has been asked before and therefore I have some idea of the lump I shall require; so I'm sorry if I've caused any offence by unleashing a new thread under the guise of a four year old one. My ownership of a Land Rover has been a far from happy experience and DaddyCoolJordan's welcoming remark has only added to my disquiet; so I'm going to unsubscribe and just talk to my mechanic in future. Ta Ta.
