Hi, Whilst checking for water leaks in my Defender I managed to push my finger through the foot well just below the peddles. I checked the other side and bingo, same thing again.
I have checked out some of the previous threads on replacing the foot well and they referrer to welding the new ones in. On my 1990, 110, 200tdi they appear to be just screwed and bolted in.
I have ordered some from Paddocks. can anyone tell me should they be welded in or just bolted. It seems to make more sense to weld them.

I tried to add a picture but haven't cracked how to do it. I managed to add them to my album

Are yours as bad as mine? Andy Land

Passenger side yes, very bad corrosion at the top of the footwell going right across but the drivers side is only showing the first signs of corrosion. The battery box needs doing on mine too though.

My battery box is OK. I painted it and Waxyold it a few months ago.
I have some welding gear but I will need to practice a bit before putting the torch to my Landy

Mine passed its MOT two weeks ago. Can't see how they missed this?

It shouldn't fail an MOT on footwells as it's a non structural item. I checked with a mechanic before mine went in at the beginning of the year. It was, however, marked as an advisory so not sure now.

My new foot wells should arrive middle of next week. I will fit them as soon as I get them. I don't think it looks that complicated. I will go the welding route. Unless someone says something different on here. If they arrive before Tuesday I will get my Landy Guy to fit them as my Landy is going in to have a front Salisbury axle fitted.

Nice one Mike, let me know how it goes please :)

The bit thats rotten in the pictures should be welded in place.
Despite what an earlier poster said, if you have corrosion within 300mm of a structural component it should be an MOT fail. The bottom of the door post which is bolted to the chassis is most definitely structural and will be less than 300mm from your rotten footwell.

As above.
Completely replacing a footwell isn't a small job.
Easiest fix is to cut up the replacement footwell and just weld in the bit you need. Not pretty but could be done in situ.
Doing the whole footwell requires bulkhead removal in my opinion.

Pics of mine being done:
Bulkhead

mine was a bit like that.. I've just cut it out and welded a patch flush with the rest.. its easier to do if the floors are out, as I took everything out to weld a few patches on the battery box... its was dead easy!

I agree the rot in the OP doesn't look too bad in the photo's I would be inclined to cut out the rotten bit and just weld a patch in.

Thanks Waldershelf and arc. Food for thought. The rest of the foot well is solid, in fact I was surprised when I put my thumb through it. I might go the route of just cutting the bad bits out. I don't want to take the bulk head out. On the other hand I want a job done where I don't have to come back to it.
