Ok, new boy here so take it easy! Recently purchased a cheap and cheerful 1.8 ES 5 door x reg, yea yea I know! It seems to be the later version so that's one plus point at least.

So, looking to install an extra 12v socket left of dash where the mirror switch blank is. Does anyone know if there is any wiring closeby behind there somewhere to connect to? The socket will hopefully be the LR standard rear centre console type with the square cap.

Welcome, in the fuse box, there is an empty socket, 3 pins, 1 perm live, 1 live with ignition on and an earth. Use a different earth point though, I wired my cb in to it and it would turn off when I put the lights on. Hope this helps.

FREEL4NDY, yes it is but there's a square blank knockout over the other side in the exact same position. I'm guessing this was for the mirror switch in the left hand drive models. I'm also hoping there's some original mirror switch wiring behind it.
 
I've got a blank on the right of the steering wheel. No spare wires. On the left is the headlight level switch, don't remember seeing a blank on the left. I'll look later.
 
Sorry, I'm confusing you by saying dash. I mean right over on the other side between the passenger door and the airbag. There is a square knockout for presumably a lhd mirror switch?

I'd look myself but I'm not entirely sure how to knock the knock out out without breaking it!!
 
I've seen where you mean now, I've never noticed it before. Not sure how you'd get it out without damaging it. Also it may be easier running the wires from the fuse box in the engine bay if you can find somewhere to get them through the bulkhead.
 
In fact I'm not totally sure it is a knockout or just somewhere the switch would have been fixed to. Anyway, think I'll go down the permanant live connection to the interior fusebox unless someone else can advise on how to get through the bulkhead which doesn't involve a drill and lots of swearing!

Duncp73, can you let me know which spare socket in the fuse box you used, I'm thinking it's the 3 pin one in the middle. Just looking at a pic at the moment, too cold to go outside!

eta....actually just had a look at mine and can't see any empty 3 pin sockets.

its not a socket, it's a blade. top left as you look at the fusebox, will need an insulated female spade crimp to connect to it.

don't use the earth point on the three connectors, simply undo the screw which holds the fuse box to the body bottom left, slip a ring crimp behind job done.

I have strobes on the permanent supply, and secondary dash power on the ignition switched, works a treat, but not sure where they are fused so fitted an inline fuse to each one.

Cheers Optimus, explained it a bit better than me. Any idea what it's supposed to be used for? I've got my roof lights wired into it now.
 
Bit confused, this is the internal fuse box isn't it? Any chance of a pic or two. Much appreciated.
 
just spur off the cigarette lighter, unless you're gonna run two cigar lighters at the same time (!) you ain't ever gonna pull enough current to cause any trouble if you're just plugging in your phone charger and a sat nav....
 
Here you go Cooter. The orange wire is the ignition live and the red wire is permanent live. In the second pic you can just see where a relay is attached, you can use the same bolt as an earth. Hope this helps.

There's a way in through a rubber sleeve which is located underneath the engine compartment fuse box.

Very kind thanks, very handy to know. If I don't use that for the subject in question I'll be using it to wire a sub or something else.
