Driving from london to derby sunday made my rear diff spit most of its ep90 all over the m1 and my chassis/prop shaft!:eek:
Im going to top it up but does this mean ive got a cracked diff- or a seal gone that'll need repairing?Will the diff be shagged?
 
It doesnt look to be the diff casing, although ive got diff guards on (but they're clean). It seems to be where the uj meets the diff. Gonna top it up tonight and see if any leaks.
 
the diff is intact couldnt see any cracks/damage. Most of the oil was before the diff sprayed around by the prop its self by the looks of things.
Would the diff be damged by driving without the oil?Obviously im not gonna drive it till its sorted!
 
Doubt it, if it wuz chucking it about it shows you haven't been driving it dry fer ages. Should be ok.
 
Nah its not me daily drive and sunday was the longest run ive done in it.its not moved since either.
 
Just a fort. It IS diff oil int it? It isn't blowing back frum yer G/box or tranny is it? Can be difficult to tell sometimes.
 
just drop the tail end of the rear prop - no need to take it right off.
Undo the big nut in the centre of the flange (leave both wheels on the ground if you can), pull off the flange. then prise out the old oil seal, clean up and push in the new one (keeping it square).
re-assembly is the reverse!
 
and put some ep90 in!Dont sound too bad.Looks like i know what ill be doing for the next couple of nights!

Yeah, wot 'ee sez, but if it goes that smoothly there's definitely something wrong with the world. ;)
 
Got this problem on my tdi disco at the moment, discovered after a long drive down the m5 one night, a lorry i passed flashed me when I pulled infront of him, thought nothing more of it. Then i stopped at the garage and looked at the back of the motor - it was feckin drenched in oil.

Worth finding out if something has caused the seal to go or whether its just usualy wear and tear. If theres no play in the diff flange with the prop disconnected then it might be worth checking to see if your axel breather is blocked. Otherwise your new seal will probably go the way of the old one with a bit of driving.
