Just contemplating a bit of tinkering which will hopefully Guinea bit more power for towing boat.

What are the relevant advantages/disadvantages to cleaning or blanking the ear.

1. You won't get any more power, if the EGR valve is mucked up cleaning it will just return your engine to it's std full power once more;

2. If you just blank it off without any further work you won't get hardly any benefit. To ensure max benefit you need to ensure that the inlet manifold is clean and clear of a tar-like substance which tends to block it, plus washing out the intercooler helps as well.

3. If you haven't already done so, replacing the exhaust downpipe for a free flowing de-cat pipe will help with towing. Costs approx £15+tax from Paddock Spares. Easy job to do as well.

To summarise, the question should be:
blank off or remove the EGR valve - Yes, doesn't matter which (although full removal is the best);
clean the inlet manifold - Yes;
clean the intercooler - Yes
replace downpipe - Yes.
replace air filter - definitely YES

This allows the engine to breath better, so function stronger. Especially noticeable when towing.

Good luck

Replacing the exhaust down pipe for one without a cat may be a no no if the guy is not in the UK, it would fail the MOT here in France as it will in the UK if and when the new EU MOT regs are implemented.
Removing the EGR is pointless on a turbo engine, there is almost always excess air. Just blank it to stop it operating, again it will not then be spotted on the MOT

Hi there Datatek, what you have said there is not correct I'm afraid.

In the last 5 yrs I must have done perhaps 20 TDi 300's and a similar amount of of TD5's. All of which passed their Contrôle Technique with flying colours.

ONLY, ONLY if the vehicle had a cat fitted when it left the factory. Dosco 1s are old enough not to have them. Some disco 2's (my 2001 TD5 included) did not have them from the factory either. Just got an MOT and emissions was not a problem, neither was the lack of an EGR system - I'd deleted it some months back.
