I have an issue with a 200tdi manual gearbox setup in a rrc. Driving along and suddenly ground to a halt; a strange grinding sound. A smell of something hot; as though the brakes were being applied. Tried to set off again but would not move. I reversed and it cleared, though it' doing it again now, reversing clears what ever is wrong for a short while. Possibly n/s front wheel is locking up, though brakes are not hot. Hard to tell for sure.Any ideas? Not something I've ever come across before Andy

what about the hand brake drum? Is it hot to touch? If a shoe lining has come adrift and is binding then locks it up, reversing would indeed clear it and so the process repeats.

I'e taken the drivers side front wheel off. I think it' the wheel bearing. I think with the cold the one shot grease has gone solid in the bottom of the hub. I'e put some ep90 in and run it with the wheel off and it seems to be working ok again now. It had vibrated most of the bolts loose that hold the swivel hub onto the axle casing

It' Not the wheel bearing. When driving there is a loud chattering from below the floor then the wheels lock up. Must be the gearbox or transfer case

Pulled the nearside front hub off today. The bearing is shot. Looks like it may have been locking up and causing the problems. There are loads of bits of bearing inside.
Cheers guys
