I have been searching around all day looking at various similar topics but none seem to go past changing universal joints so thought i would pop this up.

Out of the blue there is a strange clunking/banging noise coming from somewhere in the area of the front diff/ prop. It's really only when im pulling away or when i lift off the throttle, also makes this noise when i engage the clutch after changing gear.

I have been under and had a look as when i searched for similar problems most peoples answers were UJ's, so had a look at them and they seem fine. I can turn the front prop a small amount by hand but im led to believe this is fairly normal. Tomorrow i am going to grease the UJ's and change my diff oils but i was wondering if anyone else had any other ideas what i could look into? Could it be the front diff dying? Transfer box?

Cheers.

sounds like backlash in the front diff and is quite normal but could also be the UJ on its way out so check it properly coz if that snaps it will cause damage

For the price of replacing i might just do UJ anyway.

I had been out in the snow on Sunday so a bit of wheel spin had been happening. Parked it up to return to it yesterday and heard the banging which i have not heard before, which makes me think something is on its way out.

Cheers.

check that its not your rear aframe ball joint on the rear axle when thats warn it clunks and bangs as u described i no you said noise was at front but worth a check

Could be pinion bearings or panhard rod bushes although the layer would show up when steering I would have thought.

Think i might have found the problem. Grabbed ahold of the transfer box end of prop shaft and i can get up and down play in the universal joint where as on the diff end its solid with no play.

Guessing this will be my issue.
