hello all, i'm trying to wire in some spots on the front but i'm having trouble, can get them working, but wont switch em off. do you need a switch on the dash to turn them off and on with the main beam?

any help would be gratefully recieved.

just done mine today, in order to have them come on with the main beam the switch wire from the relay has to be connected to the main beam feed wire (as this acts as the switch), you'll need to be fairly confident with car electrics, have a multi meter to check which is the main beam feed wire, also somebody else on this forum suggested to have an isolator switch to isolate them from the light circuit when wanting to just use main beam, which seems a good idea.

if you don't feel confident doing it, i would recommend you get someone who knows about car electrics to do it for you, it's easy to make a mistake if you don't know what you are doing, 70-100 amp batteries are very powerful.

you can get the feed from the main beam from the back of the fuse box... just check the picture of which fuse relates to the main beam
 
hi thanks for the quick replies, was trying to pick up the feed from the back of the headlight, which was keeping em on all the time. will pick the feed up from the fuse box, as soon as the missus brings my disco back.

You can pick up the relay feed from the fused side of one of the headlamp circuits or any where along the feed wire to the headlamp it makes no difference, but best to fit the relay in the engine bay to keep the feeds to the spot lights as short as poss.

NOOOOO!
dont take the feed from there - yu can take the relay energising link from there, but not the power - yu will burn your switch out.
take a fused feed from the battery to the relay and the energising link from the main beam wire close to the headlight.
 
Two diagrams the first shows returning to the battery neg but a good local earth connection will do, the other shows the supply from the ignition circuit but you can use the headlamp supply instead.

I used battery for the 12v supply with an inline fuse to relay, then feed from the relay (power) to the lights, that are earthed back to the battery, then the gate/switch feed spliced from just after the headlamp socket, first testing current when the main beam was on, finally the earth from the last terminal off the relay back to battery neg.

Yeah that's what I meant, should have made more of a point of taking the LOW power one that activates the relay, I'm not mental!
