I've been tweaking my injection pump so I would like to install an exhaust gas temp probe.

I was planning on drilling and tapping the exhaust manifold in situ. I've found some decent pictures of where peeps have located their probes, but all of them are genuine defender 200 TDI's, The disco ones have a different manifold arrangement.

Does anyone have any pictures showing the best position or thoughts?

Thanks.

Does the 200 have an egr system, like the 300? If so, why not just put it through the blanking plate?

I've done mine, I can go take a pic of mine now if you like?

Works a treat and I drilled and tapped it in situ.

At the minute mine only reads when my electric fan comes on, however before that it's good to know when your getting up to 700 degrees

I'm looking into this as well for my 200tdi D1, if it had a 300tdi type turbo then fitting an egt probe is easy through the egr blank plate but I suppose I'll have to experiment with a spare 200 type exhaust manifold. o_O
am waiting for my kit to arrive so not looked into it much as yet :)
what type of probe have you got? is it fixed or adjustable for fitted length as this could be an issue

Hi Robbie, That would be great thanks.

Was that intentional or down to your awesome electrical skills? :)

Hi Rich, I went for this one. Length should not be an issue as the ports are deep. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/251875422839

looks like the mount is a compression joint so presume no problem with depth & can be fitted anywhere across the manifold / porting??

I've ordered a different gauge that's fitted in a pod but I'm only intending to fit to check & test then remove to use in another car, too many toys

Not intentional I'm afraid mate. Worked fine before td5 bulkhead. Tonight I ordered a new probe. I drilled my manifold with iirc a 9mm drill bit and then I used a tap in my drill. It went straight through much to my surprise but plan b was to weld it in if I cocked up..

You then set the probes depth so it sits in the middle of the pipe and tighten it.

Mine is sat near piston number 2 I think, this measures the temp mainly from that piston but I'd expect them to all be the same. I'll upload a pic in the morn

Sounds like an earthing issue. You should have main battery - to gearbox and engine to chassis strap. Instruments have an small diameter earth connecting to the engine bay side of the bulkhead close to the fuel filter.

My elec fan earth's to my 2nd alt casing. Feed to egr guage is taken from ignition fed live and earth runs with another earth somewhere. I'll figure it at some point lol. I forgot a pic this morning I'll get one for you tonight

I have been working on the wiring in mine tonight in the dark and only just remembered the pics. Uploading now

Really easy to do. I put it off for a while but the manifold drilled easy and tapped even easier, only thing is now I find myself watching my temp rather than the road lol. Goodluck.

Robbie, did you butt the end of the probe against the inside of the manifold or did you leave it in the middle of the flow?
Rich.

Yes. I didn't go exactly where I wanted to at first. I drilled and tapped somewhere thst I could get the drill and tap in. I put the tap in the drill and turned the drill speed down to its lowest and it went straight through. Like I say my plan b was drill and weld in but I didn't need to. It was really easy the manifold isn't as thick as I had expected!
