Dear all,

Having just checked out a couple of local green lanes (more like un-metalled) roads really, so I can take some of the family out on Boxing Day (new experiences and all that) as I was driving through a ford, I wondered what the official un modified discovery max wading depth was?

The ford was only about half a foot deep, so I was not really worried, but it will rain and it might be deeper next time I get there!

Standard height disco has a max depth of 500 mm. I always played it safe with mine and gauged it using the centre of the wheel as max depth (or bottom of the plastic sill trim)
 
Paul D's the man to ask, though he's only wadded in 10ft of water he might have a few tips like using oxygen bottles etc :D
 
All wading should be done after checking the depth with a wading pole, (big stick), if you don't have a wading kit fitted, you could seriously ruin your vehicle, that's lots of time AND money to sort out. Best to go out well prepped and with some mates in several vehicles, so if anyone has a mishap, they can be helped at least to get home.
 
One thing we tend not to do is to rope up - so if the leader gets into difficulties they can be pulled back out. If the leader gets through, the second one could be pulled through, if necessary.

I have gone as deep as the wheel arch on my 110, which is about 3ft. Wouldn't go any deeper as that would mean that my dizzy as well as my feet would be under water. :D
 
ok. numpty question ......

I can see that having a snorkel would make the air intake higher..........but..........

doesn't water get in up the exhaust?

or does the blowing prevent this ?



what would happen if you stall mid swim ???

Sit in a bath and fart, observe how much water rushes up yer bum.....That should answer the first question.

Take a straw and shove it.....oops...wait....errm....place your finger over one end and dunk into the water....

That should sort out question 2 :)
 
you need to treat unknown depths of water with great respect , especially if fast flowing , lives have been lost even in UK , let alone the number of vehicles suffering serious engine damage, wading is not the best environment for motor vehicles , and I would ( and have done) only do it if there wasnt an alternative , In Australia have had to resort to driving along the railway line when the water got halfway up the doors ! JMHO
