Hi guys, i have no idea who could help me on this, I have a 300tdi disco 1 that at present refuses to start. I can get the engine going on a bump start with no hesitation what so ever. i have checked the earths to make sure its not something simple like that. my knowledge unfortunately doesn't go any further than that. With Christmas and the likes funds are low and I am hoping someone here has had similar problems with their car, and possible solutions.

I have a Haynes manual on the way but am wanting to get in there and get things sorted, the car has been reliable till this point, just wanting some helpful advice. Someone suggested taking the starter motor off and soaking it in diesel... still unsure about this method.

Ideally if someone in the midlands has a second hand starter motor surplus to requirements I would happily take the heavy space consuming item off your hands... its worth asking :)

Seriously though any help and advice would be great, car is a daily runner and I have just over a week to get it working again.

Is the starter doing any-thing? Try a diff battery. Try rocking the disco in gear then try and start it. Best I can think of without seeing said motor.

yeah tried that, even tried it off a booster pack... extra charge not helping, tried tapping the starter when turning the key... nothing, everything on the car works beautifully, all the right lights show up, wait for the glow plugs to warm up nicely and then nothing happens... its frustrating as I feel I should know the solution but I cant think of it. Even tried swapping key components from a working car, no difference and the components worked fine the othere way round if you get my drift.

sounds like the starter solenoid is fooked or the ignition barrel is. gotta be one of the two..

and the starter motor is doing nothing, not even trying to spin. Went out today 9after bump starting it) did some legal mud hunting - mine is standard so nothing serious - got home and it started after i turned it off. tried again an hour later... nothing, not a peep

Just a thought but chect that the exciter wire int fallen off the starter or got a break in it. also check it for voltage when key is turned.

Uncle Albert please accept my early apology for this following question. the spade terminal, is that the one on the front of the starter motor (side facing the grill), small threaded piece.

There is a Male spade terminal on the starter hidden betwen the starter and engine. With a brown wire going to it.

just above where main cable from bat. bolts on should be a small wire coming off , (that goes to ign start position) pop that off and replace with piece of wire long enough to reach bat. touching it to pos should engage starter

What is the little threaded node protruding off the front of the starter motor, there is a nut on there but no wires, just curious as to its purpose
