further to my lasty post.... back in the garage today ... alternator checked seems to be charging ok... no battery light coming on but the rev counter is still erattic .... any ideas ??

rev counter is fed pulses from the alternator.... ive had alternaters that charge but dont put the light out....sounds like you need to have the electronics pack on the alternator replaced....or just fit another complete alternator.
